It’s nice to be your own handyman, it allows us to fix things that break on our own time. Trouble is, most of us don’t have enough free time to spend fixing everything that breaks. But you also don’t want to call out a repair man for something that is a simple two minute fix. Those are the troubles that leave us saying, “Hey! I could have done that!” When it comes to garage doors, there are common issues that plague everyone from time to time. Today, All American Garage Door Repair will go over some of the most common garage door issues we see and how to fix them.
Garage Door Wall Switch & Remote Not Working
If you’ve tried to use both the wall switch and remote control to your garage door, it is certain the power to the motor has been interrupted. First, check to ensure it is still plugged into the electrical socket. If it’s in fact still plugged in and inoperable, then the GFCI, fuse or circuit breaker that controls the garage door motor may have tripped. Try plugging something else into the outlet to see if it works, if not you need to reset the breaker or replace the fuse that may have burned out. If you’ve done the above and the garage door still won’t budge, it is likely the garage door motor has burned out and needs repair or replacement. We highly recommend hiring a professional garage door company to perform this step.
Garage Door Goes Down then Back Up
If this is happening to you there is likely an issue with the alignment of your garage door’s sensors, or photo-eyes. These are two small plastic devices that typically sit on the floor on each side of the garage door, inside the garage. They emit a laser that, when lined up perfectly sends a signal to the motor that there is nothing blocking the door and it’s safe to shut. When these photo-eyes get blocked, bumped or slightly off alignment, it sends a signal for the garage door to open back up as a safety measure. If the photo eyes are aligned properly, you will see a red light glowing on the sensor of each plastic device. If there is no red light, ensure there is nothing blocking the sensor. If there is no obstruction, try moving them around slightly until aligned. Having a second person to assist you so you can have one person on each side will make this easier.
Garage Door Opens a Little then Stops
This is likely to be an issue with the garage door’s torsion springs. These are location at the top of the garage door and help to evenly distribute the weight of the garage door. They relieve pressure on the motor so it can easily open the heavy garage door, as well as make it possible for us to manually lift the door in the event of a power outage. Without these springs, the door would be too heavy to lift. This step is best served being handled by a professional garage door company. We highly recommend replacing all the springs at once for even wear and longer life.
