There are various types of garage doors. The best is made of steel galvanized panels with a baked-on enamel finish. Types are sliding, folding, up and over and roll-up are a few options. The most common is the sectional door with tracks and rollers and either roll up along the ceiling or sideways along a wall. The wood look is popular whether real wood or a simulated wood grain. There are doors that are available with or without windows.
Steel Garage Doors
Steel doors are made of two layers of galvanized steel. The surfaces are either primed and painted or covered with a composite material. They can be painted to match or create a contrast with you home and are available with insulation. Steel is good, but not perfect. It is subject to dents and corrosion.
Wood & Composite Garage Doors
Wood doors are built in layers called ‘plies’ to prevent warping. The popular woods are redwood, cedar, fir and lauan. Wooden doors can be stained on site or ordered pre-stained by the factory. Wood Composite doors are typically built with a wooden frame, covered in sheets of fiberboard. Thicker the fiberboard the higher the quality. The better models use a high-density fiberboard with molded details simulated wood grain, grooves and other details that mimic real wood. Their cores are filled with polystyrene insulation.
Aluminum Garage Doors
Aluminum framed doors with aluminum panels eliminate the problems of corrosion but are easier to deform. Dents, dings and scratches are more easily created with aluminum. Lighter and corrosion resistant are the advantages. Colored, brushed or glass panels.
Fiberglass Garage Doors
Fiberglass are subject to denting and are susceptible cracking. They are impact resistant and corrosion proof. Two layers of fiberglass panels are bonded to a steel frame with polyurethane insulation. The ends of the panels are capped in steel to improve strength and rigidity.
Vinyl Garage Doors
Vinyl door are resistant to denting and breaking. Again, though the frames are steel filled with polyurethane insulation. These share many visual features with fiberglass as both are synthetic materials. They also incorporate steel for framing with fewer color choices than fiberglass. They are durable requiring little maintenance. But given the local southwestern sun and weather it is unknown just how they will cope here in the Las Vegas heat.
Belt, Chain & Screw Drive Garage Door Openers
Openers can be equipped with chains, belts and screws to lift and open the doors. Belt drives are quiet compared to chain drives. Chain drives are tough and can be sized to lift the heaviest doors. Screw drives tend to maintenance free, require no lubrication and can be quiet and provide smooth operation. Screw drives incorporate a steel drive screw.

Real wood and synthetics like fiberglass or vinyl may not weather or hot summers as well as steel. Wood would also entail higher maintenance. Synthesized wood products would hold up better than real wood. Engineered wood products tend to be more durable than the natural products.
